    [04.28.06 entry, revisited...]

Top 10 traumatic injuries suffered in our family [many more, but the incidents below made this final list]

#10. Victim: Paul Cho | Injury: mild concussion | Background: Paul, Earnest, Ho, and I were playing some street baseball in my old residence in Lynnwood in the late 80s, and I hit a deep shot to 'center field' which Paul was tracking down with Griffey-like grace [running backwards looking up to catch the ball], and all of a sudden we hear a loud 'boom'. We scurry over to the sound to find Paul laying down on the ground knocked out, his face had forcefully met the metal mailbox head-to-head, and the mailbox was victorious. Amazingly, as he was temporarily knocked unconscious, he held the ball in his glove, he had made the phenomenal catch.

#9. Victim: Ho Kim [my late kid brother 1977-2000] | Injury: permanent skin damage to foot | Background: We were in Korea when we were kids [early 80s] and having a lovely ramen breakfast in the morning, as my mother brought out the boiling ramen pot to our small circular table. I reached out eagerly in anticipation as I proceeded to knock the pot out of the control of my maternal unit, spilling the boiling soup onto my brother's left foot. The pain was so excruciating for him that it took him at least 20 seconds to commence wailing after shock. :T

#8. Victim: Ho Kim | Injury: burns to his hand and forearm | It was 4th of July and Earnest's father [Reverend Cho, awesome evangelist in Korea|Japan] was entertaining us with some fireworks display. All of a sudden, he looks at us with mischievous eyes and tells us, "run for your lives," as he proceeded to light a roman candle. Ho, Paul, Earnest, Paul and I ran for our lives, as he started firing on the innocent. Most of us made it out of the range of fire safely, except for one. Ho Kim took a shot with a roman candle 'bullet' on his hand and into his sleeve and received burns to his hand and forearm. We can look back and laugh about it now, but needless to say it was quite the traumatic experience.

#7. Victim: Paul Chung [Grace's late kid brother 1980-2002] | Injury: loss and damage to front teeth | Background: Paul was being towed by a rope on a skateboard, as the skateboard's momentum suddenly ceased, violently throwing Paul forward onto the cement face down. He lost a tooth and severely damaged others. :T

#6. Victim: David Cho | Injury: permanent 'dimple' on his right cheek [face] | Background: David was in his backyard as an innocent child and fell as he was traversing the concrete stairs back into the house. His face made impact to the concrete, causing a deep gash and a permanent injury that he can one day tell his grandchildren that he received from a war. ;]

#5. Victim: Christine Cho | Injury: 'displaced' finger | At the age of 5, Christine Cho was sitting on a metal chair on a tiled floor in the kitchen being tested|drilled by her mother for the spelling bee competition. She rocked side-to-side on the chair, she lost balance and fell over sideways. She held on for her life to the chair as gravity took over. She was on the floor crying as her brother Enoch walked in and said, "CHRISTINE! What's wrong with your finger!?" She looked at her right hand, nothing was wrong... and she looked to her left hand as her eyes made their way towards her ring finger, to find a chunk of her finger just 'dangling' on a tiny piece of flesh, with blood dripping down. She ceased crying, and observed in shock for 2 minutes, then commenced screaming, "AHHHHHHHH-!"

#4. Victim: Grace Kim | Injury: permanent scar below chin | Background: Grace was driving to downtown Seattle on a rainy day, as her car lost control on I-5, hydroplaned, spun out, and crashed into a median. The impact sent her head forward onto the steering wheel [no airbags] and her teeth tore through her chin, causing a significant puncture. She was treated at ER after a ridiculous 6-hour wait, and the injury never healed correctly. :T [I think it gives her character and makes her look even cuter though... ;]

#3. Victim: Ho Kim | Injury: stabbed forearm | Ho and I had just finished watching a kung fu movie, and riding on the adrenalyne, I grabbed the nearest sharp object [happened to be a letter opener] and I mocked some dagger throws as the object was accidentally released. Amazingly, the form on the throw was perfect as the letter opener embedded itself into my brother's forearm approximately 1|2" in. He was quite upset and did not speak to me for several months. :T

#2. Victim: Hun Kim | Injury: punctured roof of my mouth | Back in my college days, I was quite the domesticated one [and proud to say I still am] and was cooking some fried rice for some friends. I was also watching a baseball game as well and had the long wooden chopsticks in my mouth. One of the chopsticks fell to the floor, and as I reached down quickly to pick it up [with the other chopstick in my mouth], I hit the table in a perfect location where a groove was present. I saw a blinding flash of light, and when I opened my mouth, the remaining chopstick was still hanging from the roof of my mouth. I pulled out the chopstick [I think endorphins were rushing into my body, as I didn't feel any pain] and quickly ran to the bathroom, and found myself looking like a vampire who had just fed on a prey [blood gushing out of mouth, et cetera]. Still ate dinner that night though, that was some exquisite fried rice [same chopsticks were not used for the remainder of the cooking].

#1. Victim: Earnest Cho | Injury: shot in the neck | It was a lovely Renton evening at the Cho residence, as Earnest was on the phone with Eric Lim [Jean's kid brother]. Paul was playing around with Enoch's pellet gun and bursted into the room, mocking gun play at Earnest. What should have been an empty shot fired, a pellet was in the picture, and Earnest was startled to find a sting on his neck. He touched the impacted area, looked at his fingers to find blood, and let Eric know that he had to 'get off the phone now'. He proceeded to the bathroom [as calm as he can be] in a futile attempt to 'squeeze' it out like a zit. Up to this point Paul is still in trauma [probably more than Earnest] knowing that he may go to jail for shooting someone and possibly fatally injuring him. To make a long story short, they ended up in ER, Paul was yelled at and rebuked by an officer, and the doctors found it too risky to perform a surgery to remove the pellet [to this day the pellet remains in his neck]. The doctor also noted that had the pellet been millimeters to the left or right, it could've hit a major vein to cause worse damage or even death. Hallelujah it did not. Earnest ultimately benefited from this incident, as he moved to Nashville and as he was making his name known as a talented sound engineer [in the r&b+hiphop realm], he informed his collegues that he had thug|street creds as he was shot in his lifetime. :]

Grace 1 week after her auto accident:

    Honorable mentions:

    A. Victim: Paul Cho | Injury: sliced finger tip | Background: Paul was doing some yard work with a heavy duty machine to cut bushes down at his current residence, when his grip slipped and the machine got a hold of some of his finger. Needless to say it was a bloody mess.

    B. Victim: Ana Cho | Injury: 6 stitches to right hand | Background: Ana was going out on a sunny day to meet one of her girlfriends. In her excitement, she forgot that there was a set of stairs in front of her door step [walking out of her own condo], and proceeded to fall face forward down towards the gravel. She got up and wiped her pants, and found blood stains all over her pants, so she commenced crying. She went inside the house and her mother reassured her that it was going to be ok, but her playful older brother Earnest came after and sat her down and conveyed, "Ana, I love you, but you're gonna die." Ana was 13 at the time and genuinely believed her brother's words. She began to repent of ALL her sins [every single one of them] that she committed in her life, and things did not get better when she went to see the family doctor and he said "WHAO!" in surprise of her injury. She began to cry again with such passion|fervor|length that the doctor actually got up and left. He eventually came back with the apology of Ana's mother and she was treated. :]

    B. Victim: Hun Kim | Injury: dislocated pinky fingers | Background: A long long time ago I was rather upset at my lackluster performance during a pickup game of hoops and attempted to release some of the tension by throwing the basketball at the backboard at a high velocity. I missed the backboard, hit the front of the rim instead, the ball bounced back and w/ equal force and impacted my right pinky finger. As I shook my hand in pain, I knew something was 'off' when one of my fingers was dangling around during this shaking process. My left pinky finger was damaged in similar fashion as a good collegue of mine [his name starts with a 'J' and ends with an 'immy'] and I were warming up before a flag football tourney. His first throw was quite short from the distance it needed to cover, awkwardly bounced up from the ground into my right pinky. To this day when I play the bass guitar and there's some intense scale runs during any songs 110bpm and above, the finger often twitches out of control, causing some interesting variations to established melodies.

    C. Victim: Ho Kim | Injury: badly scratched up face, forearms, and knees | Background: When we came to the states in the mid-80s from Korea, our family wasn't very well off [financially speaking] so my kid brother and I were forced to share one bicycle purchased from a Payless or Fred Meyer [forgot]. Still we treasured this fine piece of American engineering [every half-mile or so we had to put the spokes back on] and constantly bickered and argued to see who gets to ride it. I implemented a schedule system for switching shifts every 15 minutes, one rode as the other watched enviously from the sideline. One particular shift, Ho got pretty greedy and decided to ride 2-3 minutes past the end of his shift, so in anger and vengence I took a stick and throw it at him. Unfortunately I completely missed hitting any part of him, but the stick managed to get lodged into the front spoke as he was travelling at a very high speed attempting to flee from me. The bike stopped abruptly, he didn't, he flew and landed... and 2 ladies that were in the parking lot proceeded to yell at me for 30 minutes, though I didn't comprehend an ounce of the english language. :T

If you have any of your own cherished stories to share and they are rated PG-13 or below, please feel free to add to this ongoing list.

  • Wow. Very gory details yet interesting to read. I would think that your family has some kind of curse...

  • those are some nasty details...while i was reading...it felt like going past a major accident on the road...i wanted to stop looking but i couldn't...fortunately i've been relatively accident-free

  • i kno this is bad, but the one about earnz made me seriously laugh out loud...

  • #?. Victim: Jefferson Kim | Injury: dog bite in the beans | About late elementary school or early middle school, I always went to my neighbors house to check out their dogs and feed them hot dogs. They were an older, Hungarian couple or something like that. Anyway, they have this bull dog that has a head that's so big it has be surgically removed from the mother at birth. The dog is excited to see me, gets between my legs, jumps up with its jaws wide open, and chomps hard. Skin was broken.

  • wow...good stuff, got a good kick out of that!

  • aww she's (grace) still smiling! great!
i've never even had a bloody nose before....

  • I'm suprised Enoch isn't on that list... Hahahaha. Oh man where do I start. I'll use your format. I'll only list two of my most severe...That Earnie one is the best. Hahahahaha.

Victim: David Chong | Injury:  3rd Degree Concussion | During a football game I was told to play the position of fullback (the running back who blocks for the tailback). The play was for me to receive the handoff and to run inbetween the center and the guard. I had noticed the All-State, All-Conference 6 foot 3, 245 pound linebacker looking down at me who was also my friend as I pointed towards him with my chin. He understood my taunt and knew I was coming right at him. The play began and I had received the handoff and had began running through the line and I had met my friend in the middle. I then remember a sports trainer waving a tiny penlight into my pupils the moment I had woken up from my black-out which lasted for nearly 90 seconds. I got up and was disoriented and could not tell left from right for a few minutes. I had regained my sense of direction and was sidelined for the game. Not knowing the extent of my concussion, I had asked the coach to let me back in except I wasn't allowed in. I had gotten home only to see a woman in my house who I did not know. I felt paranoid and had threatened to throw the unknown woman out of my house. My dad calmed me down and put me in my room. Four days later I had found out that the "unknown woman" was my mother. I also forgot how to use a phone for roughly about a week.

Victim: David Chong | Injury: Ankle Injury |  I was taken snowboarding for the first time and I had a fun time. I went onto a slope that had a difficulty of a blue square/green circle. I had no idea what the symbols meant, I thought they were nice designs on the signs so I just went on it because it looked easy. I had learned quickly how to turn, how to carve except I did it backwards but I had to stop every once in a while or I just ate snow. It rained that day so it was really icy. Everything was fine except I didn't know how to get off the lift. I'd just get off, fall, and crawl away as fast as I could to clear the landing zone for the next people. So the people I was with got tired of the tiny life I was on, and told me I was good enough to ride a more bigger lift. So they took me to a lift with a sign of a black diamond. I went on the lift and passed the first set of clouds and saw three more lifts go into the second patch of clouds. I passed the second patch and had seen my third patch of clouds above me, and my lift still going up. I had cleared that patch of clouds and I had seen my lift end at the top of the mountain. I had told my friends to get off before me so I could just fall and that I wouldn't take them with me. So I signaled to the operator working the lift to slow it down, he only looked confused and waved back at me. So everyone got off and I jumped off last second. (I had a rental snowboard where I stepped into the snowboard and it locked in, not the kind with straps). I had slid down the ramp and my board had gotten stuck in the ice. My whole body had proceeded to turn but my ankle was still locked in place. I had began to hear ripping, tearing, breaking, and cracking. After doing a turn my board came loose and I had slid to the bottom. I looked up only to stare at people in shock looking at me. My friend had told me not to look back. I didn't but what I didn't know was that as I was laying on my stomach, my right foots' toes were pointing towards the sky as my left foots' toes were pointing towards the ground. I'll leave it at that to keep the PG-13 Rating. :)

  • Oh yeah I broke my friend's collarbone too.

  • one of the greatest posts yet.

  • dude, paul shot someone in the neck?

  • OMG OMG OMG...

  • Patrick once broke his femur while riding his bike and was in traction for almost a year. Another time he broke his collar bone when he jumped off a bed and his mom didn't believe him so he had a broken collar bone for a week before seeing a doctor. He has had many other injuries.

The only injuries I've had are a few stitches and one bee sting. Praise God.

  • I wish I could've seen Paul's face after shoot Ernie... :)

  • Bwhahaha, when Earnie told me he had been shot by Paul, I didn't believe him. I distinctly remember laughing at him.

See, it's all fun and games until someone gets shot in the neck. Then it's just all fun.

  • I should tell you about my BB story sometime...

  • I don't know if it's safe to hang out with you and your extended family.  :)   Those are some great stories though.  Hun, what about the rabbits?  JUST KIDDING!

  • ahh yess... the stories... =)

  • dont mess with me or i'z shoot you.. =)

  • hahha.... such an entertaining post!!! i broke my collar-bone once as i was riding a bike with my sister's friend and she rammed into a parked car.  i flew off 10 yards away and bumped my head on the curb of the culdesac island (this was in cali of course) and remember screaming my head off as my mommy rushed out to see what was wrong.  needless to say, after that point, i remember a glimpse her of picking me up with this awful frightened face, then waking up at the hospital later. the doctor was saying if the impact had been a little more, i would have cracked my skull... gross huh? surprisingly, i dont really remember being in too much pain.

  • some of those are really gross... i have a permanent scar on my chin too.. stitches from preschool.

  • What can I say, "We are the "CHO's."

  • I don't want to be around yall when there's a thunderstorm.  My #1 traumatic injury: Summer of 2000?  Line drive to the face - as a pitcher.  It was the thud heard round the fields.  Was enough to remove most of my freckles from my right cheek, and give me a black eye(s). History making decision: No more women pitchers for Jubilee softball.

RE: Your victims of unexplainable xanga sitings.... George is such a drama queen ;)   Are you reading this George?  I can't wait to see who your next victim is :D

  • i fell out of a tree (in Gambia) that was as tall as a three story building.  the only reason i survived or wasn't permanently disabled was because i hit 2 branches on the way down.  it was nuts.  our gardener saw it all and thought i was dead cause i was just laying there for a good 10 minutes not saying anything.  hahahaha.... good times.

  • Hun, you xanga's are the bomb.

Your family's injuries are also the bomb.

    I wanna shoot someone w/ a bb gun....keke....just kidding....

    doesn't david have stiches too...

your xanga's rule the world of xanga...

    all hail king/dictator of xanga!

    Love,

    Sunny

    Now that's what I call comment-palooza....

    :)

  • oops...many many spelling errors....i just sat outside for an hour for lunch & my brain's a lil fuzzy...

  • someone i know ripped something in his pants while sliding down a volleyball net pole.  i'll leave his name out of this...

  • hey in ur last entry that was my cabin leader at GXP. funnay stories!

  • that was the first blog i've LOLed to in quite some time. you are amazing, hun. AMAZING. :)

  • what a fun family!

  • I had to take a break from your post, and come back to read the rest ;) I agree...Grace's scar is 'cute' and gives her character (aside from the fact that it was probably painful!)  My tummy!  #1 had me rolling. I remember when Paul shot Ernie....Eric was freaked out when he told me (I got freaked out), and then he thought it was funny.

  • you guys are crazy. oh i have a story, and it has to do w/baseball. so we're playing softball/baseball wahtever, i'm the catcher, and guess who? is the batter, yes my older brother david, so proceeding to think that he is the right-handed version of griffey jr. he swings, and misses, the follow through of his swing smacks me right in the face, right in the stinkin' face!! needless to say i don't play much baseball anymore...

  • What the... Paul passed away? I'm seriously in shock...

  • [quote]What can I say, "We are the "CHO's."

that's why i'm glad to be a 'park'.    go parks.

  • Hun, fun but scary stories! Sounds like you and your family clan has had quite the history! I hope Paul is alright!

Victim: Becky Kim | Injury: Stiches in the front of my head: First Time: I was about 4 years old and was having dinner with our family and many other guests. The curious child in me decided to go outside on my own and play on the swingset alone.  Remember those swings that are two chairs facing each other and they go back and forth together? I stood behind one of those and thought I would watch it swing as high as I could make it go up. The only thing wass, I forgot to move as I was in awe of its height and the big ol' nail that was sticking out of it, GUSHED through the front of my head. I still have a scar in my hairline. Ask, and I will show and tell. I went to the ER and a nice doctor gave me a latex glove blown up like a balloon with a smiley face.

Victim: Becky Kim | Injury: Stiches in the back of my head: Second Time: I was probably in my primary level of grade school when I was in the kitchen of our Wisconsin home and fell back and slipped on the kitchen floor. It hurt so bad. As I was running away from the kitchen I looked at my hand that had blood all over it. My parents were working so my sisters and I had our friend's dad come over and look at it. He drove us to the ER and I got stiches in the back of my head.

Do root canals count? Nah.. If so, I got three stories... sick right?

    Thanks for the injury forum.

  • I had almost the same ramen injury as your bro! I was in kindergarten, at my mom's store, when she was moving a pot of steaming hot ramen to the table, and I was in the way. It spilled all over my foot. I was wearing knee high socks and my mom screamed and pulled my sock off, along with my skin...My mom didn't want to take me to the hospital, so I went to school with a big bubble of skin on my foot and my teacher FREAKED out...hence my first trip to the ER. Ramen is so dangerous~

  • hi hun!  ouch... getting injured is never fun.  just wanted to point out that my mom's maiden name is cho, so i was reading through your profile and noticed, "christine cho" and was confused for about... 3 seconds

  • I think its funny how great you're involvement, sometimes just presense, but often involvement, in these injuries.

Maybe you guys should all wear a caution sign.

CAUTION:  There is a high chance of injury during the duration of time with this person.  Please keep out of reach from children.  Serious injuries can occur.

Ahahahaha.  Take care of yourselves.  ^_^

  • how's a 3rd degree burn (left hand), getting hit by a motorcycle (broken left collarbone), and appendectomy, all before the age of 8?

  • a jeep sah neem gave me and my sister ice cream to eat in front of my dad's church in seoul when i was about 4 or 5 years old. i stole ice cream from my little sister and was contently licking both cones while my sister cried next to me. my mom being frustrated with her oldest brat, gave me 1000 won to go get candy and sody pop with for my little sister. on my way back,(i think i was running or skipping) i somehow tripped over a rock and landed right in the middle hole thingy for gates to go into in front of my church. i split my chin and saw red. the screaming fromt he pain brought the groundsman who lived at the church out-who saw my plight and piggy backed me to a hospital where i got some impressive stiches to my chin. i am not convinced i didn't get it for stealing from my sister and being a total brat.

  • Hilarious, and at times, nauseating, post!

#1: Victim: Yee Feng | Injury: Stitches on my forehead.  | Background: I was about 13 and had been playing Little League Baseball for a few years. My parents had invited several families over for Thanksgiving dinner.  Being a Little League veteran, I decided to invite my neighbor over and challenge some of the other boys to some baseball in the backyard, and I was CERTAIN we would be victorious.  Though our backyard was not very large, we decided to use a wooden bat and a real baseball.  Since there were only 5 people total, we had to catch for our own team.  So, I squatted down behind my friend as he stood up to bat, and shortly after the first pitch was delivered I felt my head and body flying backwards.  After a few moments, I realized I was lying face down in the grass with my head in my hands.  After shaking off the pain, I stood up and saw my brother's face turn pale.  I looked down at my blood-covered hands and figured I was going to die, since you're not supposed to have that much blood on  your hands unless you're an axe-murderer.  I ended up rushing into the house to interrupt the dinner party, and my dad took me to the hospital, where after a four-hour-wait I got stitched up.

#2: Victim: Yee Feng | Injury: Stitches on the back of my head.  | Background: Having spent almost my entire life in San Diego, at the age of 20, I decided that I should learn how to surf.  I knew one of my friends had a surfboard, so I asked him if I could borrow it and he said that would be fine.  I hadn't taken any lessons, but I had seen people surf before and it didn't seem that hard. (mistake #1)  I drove out to the beach by myself on a cold morning (mistake #2) and proceeded to get into the water with the board.  I built my confidence by catching the tiny waves near the shore and decided to paddle further out.  I got into position for a 3-4 foot wave and snapped into a crouch to victoriously surf my way to shore.  A second or two later I noticed that the nose of the surfboard was sinking into the water and I felt the entire board about to flip.  I lost my balance and fell in front of the board (mistake #3) and tried to get my bearings underwater.  A few moments later, something slammed into the back of my head and threw me forward, and I felt the board tug on the ankle collar as it drifted ahead of me.  I reached back to the impact point and felt my fingers go under a flap of skin, and I realized the fin of the board had sliced me up.  Fortunately there was another surfer there and she was kind enough to bring me to the local hospital to get staples. (Side note: I had just started a new job with an investment firm, and when they heard what I had happened, they kindly took a piece of paper, stapled it 6 times in a row, and taped it on the back of my chair)

#3: Victim: Yee Feng | Injury: Deep gash on my knee.  | Background: I was 8 years old and had never owned a pet.  However, the neighborhood cats would roam through our backyard and occasionally let me pet them.  On this occasion a cat came into our backyard and hung out with me for a while, but then decided to split.  It ran up a slope, jumped on top of the fence there, and hopped into another neighbor's yard.  I wasn't finished playing with it yet, so I decided to chase it.  I ran up the slope, jumped on top of the fence, and hopped into the neighbor's yard.  As I was "hopping" from the fence to the neighbor's yard, my foot caught on the fence and I fell awkwardly.  What made matters worse was the fact that my neighbor had a sprinkler system, and the sprinkler system controls were right below the area where I fell.  My knee slammed into the metal "+" used to manually activate the system and took a good chunk of meat out.  I probably could have used stitches, but I was too embarrassed to let my parents know how dumb their son was!
